FORT MYERS, Fla. -- As the Cardinals modify their rotation to cover the absence of Chris Carpenter for at least a turn, Adam Wainwright and Jaime Garcia will both make their second starts of spring on short rest.
Wainwright confirmed that his schedule would be adjusted from pitching every five days to going on Tuesday this time, on three days of rest.
Wainwright's start moves Jaime Garcia, who pitched two solid innings Thursday against the Boston Red Sox. The lefty will now pitch Monday in one of the Cardinals two split-squad games. Prospect Shelby Miller is set to get the other game, manager Mike Matheny confirmed.
The Cardinals are awaiting word on what has caused persistent neck pain for Carpenter before finalizing their pitching plans for the coming days.
It's possible that Wainwright could be kept on a standard five-day schedule and be ready to start opening day in Miami.
Pitching on short rest, as currently planned, would shift his schedule enough that he would be targeted for his original turn in the regular season -- the third game of the season, in Milwaukee. That would get him the home opener at Busch Stadium.
