Cardinals 2021 report card: Hitters were horrid until they were great

From the Cardinals 2021 report card: A magical win streak, a wild-card exit and a shocking firing series

Cardinals hitters were wildly inconsistent this year.

On the whole, they ranked smack in the middle of MLB teams with an on-base plus slugging percentage of .725. But that doesn't even begin to tell the story.

Before the All-Star break, they ranked 26th in OPS; after the All-Star break, they ranked sixth. In the magical month of September they ranked fourth, including second in slugging percentage.

Cardinals pitching, as discussed in Tuesday's report card, was fairly steady throughout the year. It was the offense that caught fire during the final month of the season and propelled St. Louis to a club-record winning streak and a spot in the National League Wild-Card game.

Here's how Jeff Gordon grades the individual performances of Cardinals hitters in 2021.

Coming Wednesday: Jeff Gordon hands out season grades for the Cardinals front office.
