Memphis Redbirds first baseman and Lafayette High alum Luke Voit slugged his way to the Cardinals’ minor-league player of the month award for April, while Class AA righthanded starter Jack Flaherty asserted his place as a prospect with the organization’s pitcher of the month award.

Voit, 26, hit .360 with five home runs and 16 RBIs in his first turn as a starter in Class AAA.

The Cardinals’ 22nd-round pick in 2013 ranks in the Pacific Coast League’s top five for slugging (.652) and OPS (1.077).

Flaherty, 21, went 4-0 with a 0.56 ERA in April for Double-A Springfield. The former first-round pick is considered one of the top starting pitcher prospects in the organization, and he ranked second among all minor-league pitchers at all levels with his 0.56 ERA.

Within the month, he had a 20 2/3-inning scoreless streak, and he struck out 28 in his first 32 1/3 innings while walking only four. Opponents batted .191 against Flaherty, who has a WHIP of 0.80.
