St. Louis upends Philadelphia in Cardinals-Phillies TV ratings, although not on field

Philadelphia Phillies vs St. Louis Cardinals Game 2 National League wild card series

Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina heads to first base on a single with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning of Game 2 of a National League wild-card series against Philadelphia on Oct. 8, 2022. It was the final at-bat in the career of Molina, who is retiring.

In today’s 10 a.m. video, columnist Ben Hochman recalls the heroics of Pete Kozma (and Daniel Descalso!) from this day in 2012. Plus, a happy birthday shoutout to brief Blue J.J. Daigneault! And, as always, Hochman picks a random St. Louis Cards card from the hat. Ten Hochman is presented by Window Nation!

The Cardinals were swept by the Phillies in their recent first-round playoff series, but the roles were reversed in terms of television ratings.

According to Nielsen, which tabulates viewership, the two games were seen in an average of 14.1% of homes in the St. Louis market. The number in Philadelphia was 10.5.

Game 1, on Friday afternoon, was shown on ABC (KDNL, Channel 30 locally) and drew a 12.6 rating in St. Louis. Philadelphia scored six runs in the ninth inning to overcome a 2-0 deficit and won 6-3. (The Philadelphia rating was 9.3).

Game 2, on Saturday night, was on ESPN2 and pulled a 15.5 rating in the Gateway City. The Phillies won 2-0. (The Philadelphia figure was 11.7).

But neither contest generated a rating close to 23, which was the number in St. Louis for the Cardinals' winner-take-all wild-card game last year against the Dodgers. TBS has the telecast of that contest, which Los Angeles won 3-1 on Chris Taylor's two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth.

The figures for the Philadelphia series follow a regular season in which the Cards had the best local TV rating in the majors — 7.3, which was the team's best since recording the same number in 2018.
