MILWAUKEE • After Tuesday’s game, Cardinals manager Mike Matheny admitted that there was something about Miller Park that made him uncomfortable watching his pitchers break from the batter’s box for first base.

That something was standing not too far away: Adam Wainwright.

Back in April against Milwaukee, Wainwright’s Achilles’ tendon ruptured as he tried to run from the batter’s box to first at Miller Park. He’s back here this week trying to make an improbable return.

On Monday, he’ll find out if he can come back.

Wainwright will meet with doctors to determine the strength of his leg and its readiness for baseball activity. He said after that appointment he and the team will have a better sense of what’s realistic.

While his bullpen sessions continue to gain in intensity and pitch count, Wainwright has yet to field his position. He must be able to cover first base and get off the mound to field a bunt comfortably and without the risk of further injury for the Cardinals to consider him for game action.
