QUESTION: I get that Jose Martinez has been hot lately, but when you factor in Harrison Bader’s power potential, defense and baserunning, doesn’t that make him hard to sit?
BENFRED: Bader came off the DL one week ago Wednesday. He started for the first time since then Monday night. In between, he got five plate appearances off the bench. He wasn't exactly rotting away.
He just happened to open the door for Martinez, who has spent April slashing .388/.408/.507. Jose is one of the most effective hitters on the team when he's feeling it, and he's feeling it.
This is what happens when injuries happen. Doors open. They can be shut again, but to assume they slam shut just because the guy who comes back is healthy, well, that's not always what's best for the team.
There will be more injuries. There will be slumps. There will be illnesses. For these reasons, it's best to try to keep all irons as hot as possible -- and not pour water on one that is red.
