O'FALLON, Mo. • Will Robertson got the chance to be a hero Tuesday.
The first baseman made the most of his chance with a home run in the top of the eighth inning that propelled Fatima to a 3-2 victory against Scott City for the team's second Class 3 baseball state championship in three years.
“Growing up, as a little kid, you picture yourself hitting a walk-off home run,” Robertson said. “This wasn't (a walk-off), but with the same atmosphere, same crowd, this was big. It's close.”
The Comets have won three state titles overall, including 1992 along with two of the last three seasons.
Fatima (22-7) took a 2-0 lead with single runs in the second and third innings on run-scoring hits by Hunter Hennier RBI and Robertson RBI.
Scott City (21-13) roared back with a pair of third-inning runs to tie the game 2-2 as Hunter Copeland and Drew Short both drove in runs.
“I don't think we played the best game defensively,” Robertson said. “We hung in there. We really battled it out.”
Matt Temmen, Robertson, and Hennier all provided two hits apiece for Fatima.
Logan Vogel pitched eight complete innings for the Comets, finishing his season 9-1. Both of Vogel's runs were earned and he scattered nine hits while walking one and striking out five.
Robertson said winning a second title in Fatima's third consecutive state appearance was equally special.
“It never gets old,” Robertson said. “I've been here for all three and this one is just as special as (the 2013 title).”
