The St. Pius X boys soccer team got out to a fast start Monday.
Two first-half goals proved more than enough as the Lancers beat Fredericktown 3-1 in a Class 2 District 1 semifinal at Perryville.
Noah Campbell, Carter Easter and Tyler Hedtkamp scored for the Lancers.
“Our hats are off to Fredericktown,” St. Pius X coach Steve Smith said. “They are a much-improved team from the last time we played them. They were with us a good part of the game and made us earn it.”
St. Pius (15-5, No. 10 in the STLhighschoolsports.com small-schools rankings) will play Cape Notre Dame (12-8-2) at 6 p.m. Wednesday for the district title. The Lancers will be vying for the program's second district title in succession.
Brendan Otec earned the win in goal for Pius.
The Lancers beat the Bulldogs 1-0 in last year's district final.
Lutheran North 4, Medicine and Bioscience 0 • Wayea Holloweger scored one goal in each half, including the game-winner, as the host Crusaders earned a Class 1 District 3 semifinal victory.
Jalik Smith and Tre'Von Williams also found the back of the net for North (8-15).
Greg Carr made 12 saves for North.
North, the district's top seed, will play the Crossroads-Canton winner for the district title at 4 p.m. Wednesday.
The Crusaders last won a district title in 2010.
Lutheran St. Charles 7, St. Clair 0 • A four-goal outburst in the opening half proved more than enough as the top-seeded Cougars (12-12) rolled to victory at the Creve Coeur Sports Complex in a Class 2 District 6 semifinal.
Lutheran will play Whitfield at 4 p.m. Thursday for the district title.
Ben Gueck scored the first goal and was followed up by tallies from Tri Tran and Brandon Waynick (two each), Andrew Richter and Brady Robbins.
Jake Williams earned the win in goal for the Cougars.
Lutheran's last district title came in 2010.
Whitfield 6, Sullivan 0 • A strong second-half surge turned a scoreless tie at halftime into a lopsided affair.
The Warriors (7-12) got the ball rolling in the final 40 minutes of a Class 2 District 6 semifinal.
Francisco Grevasoni had three goals and Biaya Kayembe had two while Jimmy Milgie also scored.
Grevasoni scored the game-winner to begin things in the final half.
Vangeli Vazos made 15 saves to help the Warriors.
Whitfield, which last won a district title in 2013, faces Lutheran St. Charles for the district title. Lutheran has beaten Whitfield twice this season. The first win came by a 4-2 score Sept. 4 and then the Cougars beat Whitfield 3-0 on Oct. 10.
