In the quarterfinal round for the third consecutive season and seeking a state semifinal berth for the second time in three seasons. … Against Hermann, Crusaders senior guard Madi Buford scored a game-high 16 points. Senior forward Kaylynn Hayden scored 14 and sophomore guard Taleah Dilworth added 10 in the winning effort. … Hayden averages 15.9 points per game and Buford averages 15.6 points and 8.5 rebounds.
On Whitfield: Despite a scoreless fourth quarter Wednesday, pulled out 50-47 overtime victory against Cardinal Ritter to win a district title for the fifth consecutive season. … Sophomore guard Kelsey Blakemore led Whitfield with a team-high 13 points. Junior center Zaria Daniels added 12 and junior guard Jade Moore chipped in with 11. … Whitfield is seeking a third consecutive state semifinal appearance. … Since a 9-9 start, including a season-opening forfeit loss, Whitfield has won nine of 10 games. The lone loss came to MWAA rival and Class 4 power Incarnate Word and the victories have come against three Class 5 district champions — Cor Jesu, Nerinx Hall and Rock Bridge.
Series history: Lutheran North owns a 21-14 advantage against Whitfield since the 1999-00 season, including a 56-51 victory Jan. 16. In that regular-season game, Buford led North with 20 points and Jordyn White scored 14 while Taja Foster-Walker had 21 points and 13 rebounds for Whitfield.
