CHAMPAIGN • Edwardsville senior Noah Surtin and Belleville West sophomore Josh Koderhandt advanced to the Class 3A semifinals of the Illinois wrestling state tournament Friday morning at State Farm Center, joining 11 other wrestlers from the Metro East who qualified for the final four Thursday in the Class 2A and 1A ranks.

In all, 13 area wrestlers from eight different schools advanced to compete in the championship semifinal round at 7:30 p.m. Friday.

Surtin, a Mizzou signee who last season became Edwardsville's first wrestling state champion, improved to 49-1 with a 9-4 quarterfinal decision against Mount Carmel's Rehan Uribe in the Class 3A 120-pound bracket.

At 113 pounds in 3A, West's Koderhandt earned his first semifinal berth with a 14-2 major decision against Chicago Taft's Julian Valtierrez.

Also competing in the Class 3A quarterfinals Friday morning, Edwardsville junior Lloyd Reynolds dropped a 4-1 decision to Rockford East's Aydin Guttridge.

In Class 2A, Civic Memorial twin brothers Caleb Tyus (120) and Caine Tyus (126) both are in the final four, as are Cahokia's Arnold Edwards (195) and Jacob Bullock (220). Last season, Bullock finished second in Class 2A at 220.

Jerseyville's Zeke Waltz (152) and Mascoutah's Caleb Grau (170) are the other two area 2A semifinalists.

Althoff has four wrestlers in the Class 1A semifinals — Matthew Minick (106), Anthony Federico (132), Maxwell Kristoff (145) and Joey Braunagel (170).

Roxana's Alex Maguire (152) also has qualified for the Class 1A semifinal round. Maguire is the area's top returning 1A medalist, finishing third last season at 145.

Althoff's Minick (fourth), Federico (sixth) and Kristoff (sixth) also are returning Class 1A medalists.
