The British government has apologized to the families of 97 Liverpool soccer fans who died after a stadium crush 34 years ago. The apology came Wednesday as it introduced a charter it said will sharply diminish the chances that others will endure the kinds of injustices they suffered. However, it refused to back calls from campaigners to legally require public bodies, including police, to tell the truth and proactively cooperate with official investigations and inquiries in cases of public disasters. The Hillsborough disaster happened on April 15, 1989. More than 2,000 Liverpool fans at Hillsborough Stadium in Sheffield were allowed to flood into a standing-room section behind a goal with the stadium already nearly full.

A man has been arrested on suspicion of manslaughter for the death of former NHL player Adam Johnson. Johnson died in a bizarre incident when his throat was cut by a stray ice skate in a collision during a hockey match in Sheffield, England. The 29-year-old was taken to hospital immediately …

One of the NHL's biggest stars and one of its newest stars will meet for the first time when Sidney Crosby and the Pittsburgh Penguins face Connor Bedard and the Chicago Blackhawks in the season opener. The 36-year-old Crosby is entering his 19th season in the NHL and knows a thing or two about the challenges the 18-year-old Bedard faces.

Peter Laviolette is the New York Rangers’ third coach in four seasons. His arrival in the offseason brought in another new system, a new philosophy, and new coaching style. However, the championship expectations remain the same. And Laviolette, who led Carolina to the Stanley Cup championship in 2006, knows how he wants the Rangers to play as they pursue their first Stanley Cup championship since 1994 — by pushing the puck and playing with speed.

Detroit desperately hopes to snap its seven-year playoff drought and becomes part of an NHL trend. The Nashville Predators and Pittsburgh Penguins are, too. At least five teams have been in the playoffs after missing out the previous year since the league’s current playoff format started a decade ago. The Vegas Golden Knights were one of those teams last and they won the Stanley Cup in their sixth season, a year after not making it to the postseason for the first time.

Peter Laviolette is an experienced, Stanley Cup-winning coach taking over the New York Rangers in win-now mode. Mike Babcock would have done the same in Columbus before a pre-training camp scandal caused him to resign before coaching one game for the Blue Jackets. Now they're one of a handful of teams are taking a chance on a first-time NHL head coach with replacement Pascal Vincent. Spencer Carbery in Washington, Greg Cronin in Anaheim and Ryan Huska in Calgary also fit that bill. Is anyone on a hot seat even before the season begins?

New Anaheim Ducks coach Greg Cronin knows what Trevor Zegras can do on the offensive end. During Zegras’ first day at training camp on Tuesday, Cronin began working on making sure Zegras knows that significant improvement will be expected on defense. Zegras and the Ducks agreed to a three-year contract extension on Monday worth $17.25 million.

Calgary Flames assistant general manager Chris Snow has died after a lengthy public battle with Lou Gehrig's disease. He was 42. The Flames confirmed his death Saturday night. Wife Kelsie Snow said her husband suffered a catastrophic brain injury from a lack of oxygen that doctors did not expect him to wake up from.

New Anaheim Ducks forward Alex Killorn will be sidelined for four to six weeks with a broken finger. Killorn broke his finger Wednesday night in an exhibition game against San Jose. He signed a four-year, $25 million deal with Anaheim in July after playing the previous 11 seasons with the Tampa Bay Lightning.
