USING A MAKESHIFT INFIELD?

St. Louis Cardinals v Arizona Diamondbacks

St. Louis Cardinals first baseman Jose Martinez leaps to catch a high throw from third baseman Matt Carpenter as Arizona Diamondbacks' Paul Goldschmidt reaches safely on the error in the eighth inning during a game between the St. Louis Cardinals and the Arizona Diamondbacks on Saturday, April 7, 2018, in St. Louis, Mo. QUESTION: Jose Martinez doesn't look good at 1B. Carp has limited range at 2B and his arm is suspect making the throw from third. DeJong is probably a third baseman that's playing out of position at SS. Wong is pretty good at second, but sits because of all the platooning or his slumps. Can the Cards be good with a makeshift infield like this?

GOOLD: They better hit. Kolten Wong is better than "pretty good" at second. And, in truth, the strides that Paul DeJong made at shortstop should be noted. He's done well there. Matt Carpenter had a fine game at third base Sunday against Arizona. That was lost in all the other brouhaha. Your overall point is well taken: They better hit.
