- LAUREN SUMMERS, a recent graduate of Hazelwood Central High School, has received a $1,000 Collegiate Scholarship Award from Charter Communications.

Charter gave the scholarships to 10 students in Missouri, Illinois and Arkansas.

- CHRISTOPHER DEW, a school bus driver in the Ferguson-Florissant School District, won the first-place Experienced-Conventional Division trophy for his bus-driving skills in the 2009 State School Bus Driver Safety Competition, or "Bus Rodeo."

The Bus Rodeo, sponsored by the Missouri Association of Pupil Transportation, has a driving skill test, a multiple-choice test and a timed "pre-trip test" in which participants have six minutes to spot defects such as vision obstructions or loose handrails.

Dew and five other bus drivers practiced after work, on weekends and during holiday breaks to prepare for the competition. His bus route includes Duchesne Elementary School, Cross Keys Middle School and McCluer North High School.

- ALISON WALSH of Florissant has been named to the spring 2009 Dean's List at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa.

- The Challenger Learning Center in Ferguson, which offers space education programs for schools, scouts, corporate groups and the general public, has received a $60,000 grant from Boeing. The grant, which coincides with the 40th anniversary of the first landing on the moon, will help more than 100 local teachers take part in activities similar to those performed by NASA astronauts, scientists and engineers, including the "Return to the Moon" simulated space mission. Kindergarten through eighth-grade teachers at underserved schools will receive funds to offset the cost of training workshops, curriculum materials and student programs.
