The St. Louis County Prosecuting Attorney's Office issued warrants July 30 charging James E. Hardy II, 33, of the 1300 block of Highway 109, with one count each of second degree assault on a law enforcement officer, armed criminal action, unlawful use of a weapon, and resisting/interfering with arrest for felony.

Charges followed Hardy's arrest at 10:22 a.m. July 30 as a passenger in a car stopped at Highways 100 and 109.

Officers had gone at 10:30 p.m. July 29 to answer a call of a distraught individual at Hardy's home.

Hardy approached officers with a rifle, and officers shot at him, police said.

Hardy retreated into his house before fleeing into woods behind his home. A rifle was found at Hardy's home, and police searched unsuccessfully for him overnight.

After his arrest, Hardy was taken to police headquarters and is being held on a $100,000 cash only bond.
