Former New Melle officer charged with harassment

  • 0

A former New Melle police sergeant faces charges after he allegedly sent sexual text messages to an area high school teacher and pointed a Taser at her in her classroom, according to court documents.

Terry G. Calahan, 39, of New Melle, was charged Feb. 4 with misdemeanor harassment and violation of an order of protection. He was charged via summonses, meaning he was not arrested, according to court documents.

The 31-year-old teacher, a friend of Calahan's wife since April, told police she received multiple text messages from Calahan telling her how he wanted to have sex with her, according to probable cause statements.

Calahan's harassment of the woman intensified when he visited her classroom in August and pointed his Taser at her, and then in September he visited her home while on duty and attempted to kiss her, according to court documents.

She filed a restraining order days after the September visit.

Calahan allegedly violated the protection order Dec. 10 by following the woman and conducting a traffic stop and writing her several tickets, according to court documents.

Calahan resigned from the New Melle Police Department Jan. 22, said Police Chief Aaron Burkemper.

"He was under suspension at the time he resigned," Burkemper said. "The city was conducting an internal investigation and he chose to resign during that time frame."

Burkemper said he believed the investigation, which began Jan. 8, was sparked by the woman's allegations.

Calahan joined the department as a volunteer officer in September 2007 and was hired full-time in August 2008, Burkemper said. Calahan was paid an annual salary of $27,000; it was his first professional police job, Burkemper said.

Arraignment is scheduled for April 15.
