The trip • They drove with friends from St. Louis to the Smoky Mountains, hiked Mount Pisgah and visited Asheville, then drove to Outer Banks and stayed in Duck, North Carolina, where this photo was taken at sunset.
Travel tip • Outer Banks can be very crowded during summer months, but once you get out to the Cape Hatteras National Seashore, the crowds thin and the beaches and lighthouses are beautiful.
