Case 58: Ms. B is a widow and mother of a 15-year-old son. After the death of her sister she's become the guardian of her nephew, 11, and niece, 5. Surgery for a facial and brain tumor left her with nerve damage and a loss of balance. She's learning how to take care of herself again, and has spent months in physical, speech and occupational therapy. Her son is on the varsity football team at high school, and her nephew loves video games and her niece loves baby dolls and accessories. Ms. B is struggling financially, and any assistance would go long way toward helping her give her small family a good holiday.
Case 59: Ms. C, 64, lives with schizophrenia, anxiety, chronic kidney disease and diabetes while caring for her partner, Mr. E, and her four grandkids. Both of Mr. E's legs were amputated last year and he struggles with congestive heart failure, hearing loss and kidney disease. The family's home is in desperate need of repairs but their limited income doesn't stretch that far, so Mr. E. can't get around safely in his wheelchair. They've been cooking on hotplates and the microwave for the past two years because their stove is busted. The grandkids, ages 3 to 18, need clothing, school supplies and, if possible, some gifts for Christmas.Â
Case 60: Ms. L is a loving grandmother who has stepped up to care for her 8-year-old granddaughter and her 5-year-old niece to give them a stable and safe home. Ms. L has a heart condition that makes some tasks, like hauling loads of dirty clothing to the laundromat by bus with two young kids almost too much to do. A washer and electric dryer would be a tremendous help. Ms. L has to choose between paying bills and covering basic living expenses for her and the young girls who rely on her, and she would appreciate any help possible.
The Post-Dispatch, which has partnered with the United Way for over five decades, will highlight the stories of 100 families over the next month.Â
