Out of gifts for the month
Unfortunately you've used all of your gifts this month. Your counter will reset on the first day of next month.
Case 88: Ms. C, 51, has lovingly adopted and is raising her six grandchildren after stepping in to care for them while their parents navigated significant challenges, including housing instability. Ms. C has her own medical needs from a brain aneurysm and two of her grandkids have disabilities and special education needs. Ms. C's oldest son died this summer. The May tornado damaged her house, and recently lost her employment. This family could really use some kindness and help this holiday season.
Case 89: Ms. L and Mr. M are two good friends who rely on each other to get through life. Ms. L has spent her life devoted to serving others, and took care of her ailing mother until she developed mobility challenges of her own. Mr. M is autistic and he helps her get around, and she helps him remember to take his medications and encourages him in his GED program. Ms. L is studying on scholarship for her bachelor's degree in social work and wants to work with children. Ms. L and Mr. M scrape by, living month to month and hoping to stretch their small income enough to pay for rent, gas, utilities and school supplies.Â
Case 90: Ms. B is a single mother of three kids, ages 7 to 16, who has faced numerous challenges this year. The father of one of the children has been abusive, and they are in court over custody. This summer, Ms. B's house caught fire and thankfully no one was hurt but most of their possessions were lost and she and the kids are in temporary housing for now. Ms. B lost her job while dealing with everything, and that's made the family's finances extremely tight. She is hoping for help with gifts for her kids — their Xbox was destroyed in the fire — and some help with basic necessities.
The Post-Dispatch, which has partnered with the United Way for over five decades, will highlight the stories of 100 families over the next month.Â
