Case 64: Ms. S is in danger of losing her home after falling months behind on her mortgage because of a major car repair that cost her $3,400, which she had to borrow from multiple family members. Ms. S is 75 and lives with chronic asthma, arthritis and chronic kidney disease. Ms. S is in dire financial straits, and her home needs major repairs, but still hopes to be able to give her 7 grandkids something for the holidays. Her old color TV finally died, and she would so appreciate a replacement so she could sit and relax a bit.Â
Case 65: Ms. A is a single mom to 5 children, ages 2 to 12. She's a dedicated worker, but was laid off from her job and continues to search for a new one. Ms. A's mom helps as she can, but Ms. A is $5,400 behind in rent and her car needs $3,000 in repairs. The family needs winter clothing, beds and bedding for the children.Â
Case 66:Â Ms. C is raising her 16-year-old daughter, who has been diagnosed with autism and sensory issues. Ms. C lives with diabetes, four kinds of neuropathy and cataracts that limit her vision. The father of the 16-year-old died of cancer, and because his birthday was Christmas the holidays are emotionally difficult. Ms. C is hoping for some help with home repairs, some household items and to take her daughter to some special meals at McDonald's and Denny's, her favorite restaurants.
The Post-Dispatch, which has partnered with the United Way for over five decades, will highlight the stories of 100 families over the next month.Â
