The City of Webster Groves will establish an expanded school speed limit zone near Bristol Elementary.
City Council approved the designation on March 17 with the goal of improved pedestrian safety and traffic operations during school arrival and dismissal periods.
The school speed limit zone will encompass portions of:
Gray Avenue, adjacent to the school and primary entrances.
South Gore Avenue, near school access points and pedestrian crossings.
West Cedar Avenue, north of Ambrose Family Center and between Gray and South Gore.
The posted limit will be reduced from 25 mph to 20 mph when active on school days, with the Webster Groves Police Department providing enforcement.
Both Gray Avenue and South Gore Avenue have an Average Daily Traffic (ADT) count above 1,000 vehicles per day, much larger than most residential streets in Webster Groves. Peak traffic was observed in the 7 o’clock and 4 o’clock hour for both locations, with average speeds of 11 to 19 mph.
Public Works recommended the designation with the support of the Webster Groves School District, the Bristol Elementary administration, parents, and nearby residents.
New signage will be added in the coming weeks, with the potential for future enhancements such as flashing beacons or speed feedback signs if funding is obtained.
