The City of Webster Groves Sustainability and Greenspace Advisory Commissions are proud to announce the next installment of the 2026 Eco Ed Series, "From Farm to Fork: Food Systems and Urban Agriculture," featuring Erin McFarland, development coordinator for Urban Harvest STL. The global food system currently accounts for approximately one-third of total greenhouse gas emissions, a critical challenge as the world population is projected to reach 10 billion within the next 50 years.
The event will take place on Monday, Aug. 17, 2026, at the Webster Groves Public Library. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m., with the formal program beginning at 7 p.m. Attendees will explore the complexities of the global food system and learn how local, community-based approaches like urban farming can mitigate environmental stressors and promote food sovereignty.
“Erin believes that if everyone fully understood what was happening in our food systems, they too would be impassioned to make a change,” says the event organizers. “Urban farming is one of the most holistic approaches to dismantling systems of environmental oppression while bringing communities together through healthy food.”
In addition to the presentation, the Webster Groves Public Library will feature a curated display of related resources, including Farming while Black: Soul Fire Farm's Practical Guide to Liberation on the Land by Leah Penniman, The Last Supper: How to Overcome the Coming Food Crisis by Andrew Simms, and The Third Plate: Field Notes on the Future of Food by Dan Barber. These resources are available for checkout from the library’s physical and digital catalogues.
Erin McFarland is the development coordinator at Urban Harvest STL. Her passion for food sovereignty and environmental justice was sparked at the University of South Carolina. With a diverse background as a farm hand, educator and volunteer coordinator, Erin brings a well-rounded perspective to solving food justice issues in St. Louis.
The Eco Ed Series is an annual speaker program sponsored by the Webster Groves Sustainability and Greenspace Advisory Commissions. The series offers six educational events per year designed to provide community members with practical tips for sustainable living.
