For thousands of residents and visitors, Community Days is a time to gather with neighbors, celebrate the nation’s independence, and enjoy one of Webster Groves’ most cherished traditions.
Employees from nearly every city department contribute to make the celebration safe, welcoming, and memorable. Police officers and firefighters work long hours to provide public safety and manage traffic control. Public works crews install barricades and signage to ensure streets are ready for the four-day festival. Parks and recreation staff coordinate logistics for the pet pageant, parade, and fireworks. City Hall staff also helped set up the new event reading the Declaration of Independence.
This year was especially challenging due to a last-minute cancellation by the city’s fireworks provider, highlighting the dedication of staff and behind-the-scenes support for this event.
“At 1pm on Wednesday, our fireworks vendor, AM Pyrotechnics, abruptly notified us that they were backing out,” Councilmember Jamie Hasemeier explained. “They defaulted on dozens of other cities across Missouri and Arkansas, forcing many cities to have to cancel their celebrations entirely or reschedule them for a later date.”
City employees demonstrated professionalism, pride, and an unwavering commitment to serving Webster Groves.
“Our team refused to give up,” Hasemeier explained. “Led by the leadership of Parks and Recreation Director James Boyd who scrambled to find a new vendor that could supply the fireworks while keeping our original shoot team intact.”
The Parks Department was able to secure a new vendor to supply the show within hours of the cancellation by AM Pyrotechnics. The Fire Department handled emergency permitting, and the Police Department provided additional security to make the display possible.
The city extends its sincere appreciation to every staff member who contributed to this year’s celebration. Another successful Community Days became part of Webster Groves’ proud history.
On Tuesday, July 7, Webster Groves City Council announced a decision to pursue legal action against AM Pyrotechnics. This decision reflects a commitment to protect taxpayer dollars and ensure accountability in the use of public resources. The city will make every attempt to recover the $25,000 for the fireworks show that was not provided.
