Community members gathered on Saturday, May 16, to celebrate the grand reopening of Dr. H. Phillip Venable Memorial Park following the completion of a $2.6 million renovation project.
The event highlighted the park’s extensive improvements designed to enhance recreation, accessibility and connectivity for residents, while also celebrating the installation of the memorial artwork honoring Dr. H. Phillip Venable. Members of the Venable family attended the celebration and shared reflections of Dr. Venable’s lasting impact on the community, including his niece, Victoria Fletcher, and great-niece, Erin Slayton.
The park renovation project included the addition of a new pavilion, a playground designed for children ages 2–5, an upgraded parking lot, ADA-accessible pathways, a new pedestrian bridge connecting the Foxbrook Estates subdivision, enhanced landscaping, new park furniture and the memorial plaza honoring Dr. Venable that now serves as a centerpiece of the park. These improvements build upon other recent park upgrades, including renovated restrooms and the replacement of the former tennis courts with three new post-tension tennis courts.
The renovation project was funded through the parks and stormwater sales tax, along with support from several sponsors, including $400,000 in grant funding from the HDR Foundation.
"Home in Sight" honors the life, legacy and lasting influence of Dr. H. Phillip Venable. Interwoven steel and glass elements reference an ophthalmological tool known as the adaptive lens flipper and bring together symbols central to Dr. Venable’s life and story.
This memorial sculpture celebrates Dr. Venable’s story and invites all who encounter it to reflect on shared histories, cultural heritage and aspirations for the future. "Home in Sight" was created in collaboration with the City of Creve Coeur, Dr. Venable’s descendants and community partners.
